What is adventure tourism?

We often make the mistake of associating adventure tourism with extreme tourism. And the truth is that, although they may be related, they are not exactly the same. If we refer to this type of tourism, we should say that it allows us to challenge our physical abilities in nature. In this sense, Spain has a lot to offer in this regard, offering us possibilities to engage in it on land, water, and air.

In the case of extreme tourism, it refers to activities that push us to the limit. Something that doesn’t have to happen in adventure and nature tourism if we don’t want it to. In this case, we will set the limits ourselves. The activities to be engaged in should not involve any type of risk. Despite this, since nature tourism is closely linked to physical activity, it is advisable to follow some tips to be well prepared.

What is done in nature tourism?

To better understand everything this type of tourism has to offer, the easiest way is to talk about the adventure tourism activities that can be done. In this case, we could differentiate three different types: those that take place in the air, those that take place on the water, and land-based activities.

Aerial activities: Within this type, we find many possible activities, although the most well-known and practiced are skydiving, paragliding, or hot-air ballooning. Other options include ultralight flights or hang-gliding. These require specific conditions, such as open spaces and elevated terrain.
Water as the protagonist: There are also many adventure activities in the water. We can differentiate between those that take place on the surface, such as kayaking and rafting, and those that take place underwater, such as scuba diving and snorkeling. They can be enjoyed in lakes, rivers, reservoirs, and at sea.
Land activities: In this case, the most well-known activity is trekking. However, there are others such as climbing, mountaineering, and mountain biking, among many others. As a general rule, it tends to take place in mountain ranges, although the options here are endless. In fact, it is also possible to practice it in deserts and forests.
