You know that at Goinsitu we are passionate about the best honey. A few weeks ago, we talked about the benefits and properties of honey. In today’s post, we want to continue along those lines to help you find the best honey on the market. So, we’re offering you some types of honey and the factors to consider before choosing one.
Best honey that exist
The truth is that there are a large number of types of honey, as everything depends on the bee’s habitat and the flowers found there. Thus, the nectar from the flowers collected by the bees plays a fundamental role, which can then be appreciated in the final result.
Orange blossom honey: in this case, the nectar extracted by bees comes from lemon, orange, and other citrus trees. This is usually the most common type found in the Mediterranean region. It has a light amber color and a unique aroma and a very sweet flavor.
Rosemary honey: Rosemary honey is one of the most well-known honeys of all. It has a very light color, a sweet but not overly sweet flavor, and a large number of health-promoting properties.
Eucalyptus honey: Made from eucalyptus flowers, this honey stands out for its dark color and woody flavor. Like the rest, it has enormous beneficial properties for intestinal transit and strong anti-inflammatory properties.
Blossom honey: This type occurs when the honey comes from several simultaneous blooms, so its color and flavor vary depending on the time of year it is collected.
Forest honey: This type’s color is darker and is produced throughout the interior of the Iberian Peninsula. Oaks, holm oaks, pines, hazelnuts… It stands out for its antioxidant properties and for being rich in iron.
Do you know what honeydew is?
Honeydew, honeydew, honeydew, or honeydew, is a viscous substance rich in carbohydrates that increases in viscosity and adherence as water evaporates and dissolved sugars concentrate, becoming more sticky. It is secreted by the plant itself (and can be confused with sap, but is distinguished from it by its low nitrogen and other nutrient content); and other times, it is secreted by plant parasites that feed on sap, such as aphids and some scale insects.
Do you know what forest honey is?
It is the honey that combines honeydew with the nectar of other flowers, such as heather or chestnut blossoms, since these trees coexist in many regions and bees visit them at the same time.
Do you know what mountain honey is?
It must contain a variety characteristic of high mountains. It is a natural blend of honey from a dual source: nectar and honeydew, the result of the floral nectar of wild vegetation and the secretions of holm oaks, called honeydew. The apiaries are located at higher altitudes, where landscapes dominated by heather, brambles, strawberry trees, and holm oaks predominate, which bees will use in varying percentages depending on the weather during each harvest. Likewise, legumes may also be abundant.
What to consider when choosing a good honey?
As we have seen, there are many types of honey to choose from. However, our recommendation does not place any of the above above the other in terms of quality. In fact, we believe that other aspects are more important, such as verifying the origin of the honey.
Starting in 2021, honey must indicate its country of origin on its label. This means we can avoid honeys that aren’t 100% Spanish and, consequently, offer lower quality. It’s true that domestic honeys tend to be more expensive—the Organization of Consumers and Users points out that they are 50% more expensive—but the truth is that this is noticeable in terms of quality and food safety.
Therefore, our recommendation is to choose honeys made in Spain using traditional methods.
In this sense, if we want to be sure that the honey’s origin is in our country, the most reliable option is to choose honeys with a PDO or PGI. In Spain, there are a total of five varieties with these labels: PDO Granada Honey, PDO La Alcarria Honey, PDO Tenerife Honey, PDO Villuercas-Ibores Honey, and PGI Galicia Honey.
